Emergency medical services make up the majority of the calls that most
fire departments including St. Johnsbury respond to. The fire department
acts as first responders to any medical emergency in the village area
of town. Calex Ambulance is the local EMS agency and provides transport
and paramedic are to the patients. With the fire department responding
first it provides the patient with much better and prompt emergency care.
The on duty crew will respond with an engine, assess the patient
which includes taking pluses, blood pressures and assessing breathing.
The crew will also find out exactly what the problem is and can
then relay that information to the responding ambulance.
To allow the fire department to give this service to the community each
full time firefighter must become certified as an Emergency Medical Technician
(EMT) at the Basic level. Some of the members have expanded their
training to the Intermediate level allowing even more advanced care to
be given.
