Tower 4 was purchased in 1998 as a refurbished unit, that originally belonged to the Syracuse, NY Fire Department. During the refurb much of the entire truck was replaced including the cab, bucket and all the cabinets. In 2002 Tower 4 returned to Sutphen for some additional reburb work, including undercoating, wiring, and a new piston to lift the aerial tower.

This unit is the first tower ladder apparatus to operate in St. Johnsbury, replacing a 1969 75 foot Peter Pirsch aerial ladder truck. Tower 4 responds as the second due truck to any calls in the hydrant districts. For calls in the rural district engine 3 responds second and tower 4 remains in quarters to cover other calls.

Tower 4 is equipped with a 1500 gallon per minute pump allowing it to operate independently if needed. This also allows the tower to operate as an engine company if needed. With 2 preconnected hose lines and 400 gallons of onboard water, the crew can start to initiate an attack on a fire if required.

The bucket/tower combination have proved to be a great asset to the fire department and the community. It allows firefighters to operate much more safely than with a conventional ladder truck.
