Engine 3 was the front line pumper until the arrival of engine 1 in 2001. Engine 3 was St. Johnsbury's first truck to have a cab capable of carrying more than 3 firefighters. Currently engine 3 is assigned as the rescue pumper and responds first due to all motor vehicle accidents. It also responds as the second due engine to any first alarm.

Engine 3 carries a variety of specialized equipment to assist in removing patients from motor vehicle accidents. Engine 3's primary tools are the Holmatro hydraulic rescue tools. Otherwise known as the "Jaws of Life", these tools allow firefighters to cut, and remove vehicle materials with several thousand pounds of force. This drastically reduces the time it takes to remove a patient from a vehicle.

The hydraulic pump on engine 3 allows the operation of 2 of the 3 tool simultaneously. 2 built in electric reels each hold 100 ft of hydraulic lines allowing the tools to reach remote locations.

Other incidents the tools can be used at include industrial accidents and RIT Team operations, (saving a downed or trapped firefighters).
